Jamestown Police Equipment

JPD Fleet

The Jamestown Police Department's fleet of vehicles consists of 5 Ford Police Interceptors, 1 Ford Explorer, 3 Ford Taurus un-marked vehicles, 1 un-marked Ford Fusion Hybrid, and 1 Ford Ranger pick-up truck.

In 2004 the Department adopted a new vehicle design with the purchase of two new Ford Police Interceptors. These new vehicles are referred to as "low-profile" police vehicles. They have all the same markings of a police vehicle, but they do not have an exterior light bar on top of the roof. All the blue and red emergency lights for these vehicles are mounted inside the vehicle.

With the exception of the supervisor vehicle, all the Department's  marked Police Interceptors are equipped with Moving RADAR units, and dashboard video cameras mounted inside the vehicle. The Moving RADAR unit allows the officers on patrol to determine the speed of vehicles traveling in the opposite direction while the patrol vehicle is in motion. The unit can also be set to be used in stationary mode while the patrol vehicle is parked. The RADAR units are mounted in the front and rear of each cruiser.

The dashboard video cameras allow patrol officers to record traffic stops. These cameras are mounted in the front windshield of the patrol vehicles. Every Police Interceptor vehicle in the fleet is also equipped with a laptop computer.

The Ford Explorer vehicle is used in the winter time as a patrol vehicle. It is sometimes used in the summer months for special details, or by the parking enforcement officer. Currently, this vehicle is the Department's only vehicle that does not have the new exterior design.

The Ford Ranger pick-up is used by the Animal Control Officer.

The 3 un-marked vehicles are driven by the Chief of Police, the Patrol Commander, and the Detective.

Two of the Jamestown Police cruisers are equipped with Lojack Tracking Devices. These tracking devices allow the Jamestown Police to track stolen vehicles that are equipped with Lojack. All Jamestown Police officers have been trained in the use of the Lojack tracking devices. Stolen vehicles equipped with Lojack emit a radio signal that can be tracked by the officers. If your vehicle is stolen and it is equipped with Lojack make sure you immediately notify the Jamestown Police. Once we are aware a vehicle equipped with Lojack was stolen from Jamestown we can activate the tracking signal. Only the police department from the jurisdiction where your vehicle was stolen from can activate this signal. Until this signal is activated the police cannot track your vehicle.

JPD Speed Trailer

In 2004 the Jamestown Police Department acquired a mobile speed trailer. This trailer was donated to the Department by the Jamestown Police Officer's Benevolent Association at a cost of approximately $11,000. The speed trailer is solar powered and is deployed daily in different areas around town. It has a digital display that shows the speed of vehicles traveling towards it. When a vehicle travels  over the designated speed limit, the digital display begins to flash on and off. This trailer has the capabilities to record vehicle speeds throughout the day on an internal computer. This data can then be downloaded to a computer to be analyzed. This allows the Department to identify areas in the Town with speeding problems, and during what time of day these problems occur.

JPD Mobile Command Trailer

The Jamestown Police Department is currently in the process of assembling a mobile command trailer. Using money from a Homeland Security Grant the Department purchased a trailer which is being outfitted with computer and radio equipment. In the case of a major incident somewhere on the island this trailer can be deployed and used as a mobile command center. Check back with this page at a later date to see more information and a photo of the trailer when it is complete.

Harbormaster Boats

In 2007 a new boat was purchased for the Harbormaster. The Harbormaster keeps one boat docked at East Ferry and one boat docked at West Ferry (Dutch Harbor).
