
The Administrative Division of the Jamestown Police Department consists of the Chief of Police, Lieutenant, and an Administrative Assistant. The Administrative Division is responsible for the day to day operations of the Department which includes planning, purchasing equipment/supplies, maintaining budgets, and personnel. Members of the Administrative Division work Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 3:00pm.
The Patrol Division consists of 1 Lieutenant, 4 Sergeants and 9 Patrol Officers. During the summer months there is also one civilian parking monitor. Lieutenant Angela Deneault is the Patrol Commander. The Patrol Division is responsible for patrolling the Town of Jamestown and responding to calls for service. The Jamestown Police Department receives approximately 18,500 calls for service annually. Each of those calls is initially handled by the Patrol Division. Minor incidents are investigated by this Division. More serious incidents are initially handled by this Division before being turned over to the Detective Division.
The Detective Division currently consists of one Detective. This officer is responsible for the prosecution of criminal cases in the District Court and Family Court. The Detective also prepares felony cases that are later turned over to the Attorney General's Office to be prosecuted in the Superior Court. The Detective is also responsible for follow-up investigations for all matters forwarded to him from the Patrol Division. The Lieutenant handles the prosecution of traffic violations in the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal.
The BCI Division currently consists of 2 Sergeants and 1 Detective. BCI officers are responsible for crime scene investigations. These officers receive two semesters of training at the RI State Crime Lab located at the University of Rhode Island. The BCI officers respond to crime scenes to process them for evidence such as fingerprints. Most evidence that is collected is submitted to either the RI State Crime Lab or the RI Department of Health Forensic Lab for analysis.
The Internal Affairs Division consists of 1 Lieutenant and 2 Sergeants. These officers are responsible for investigating all complaints against Jamestown Police Officers. An investigation may be initiated by a civilian complaint or due to inappropriate actions observed by other police officers. Internal affairs officers report the results of their investigations to the Chief of Police who determines what action, if any, is necessary.
