Animal Control Officer

The animal control officer (ACO) works two days from 7am-3:30pm and two days from 2:30pm to 11:00pm. The ACO's duties include the removal of dead animals from the roadway and the enforcement of all animal/pet related Town Ordinances.

The Town of Jamestown has a leash law that is in effect 7 days a week between the hours of 7:00am and 4:00pm.

What to do if you find a dead wild animal in your yard

If you find a dead wild animal on your property (squirrel, rabbit, skunk, etc...) it is your responsibility for the removal of the animal. The Jamestown Animal Control Officer is not responsible for disposing of dead animals found on private property.

If you have found a dead bird on your property and do not see any visible trauma to the bird you may report it to the State Department of Environmental Management. The State DEM may want to collect the bird for testing (EEE, West Nile).

What to do if you believe you have seen a rabid animal

If you see an animal that you believe may be rabid call the Jamestown Police at 401-423-1212. A police officer and/or the ACO will respond to investigate whether the animal is actually rabid, then deal with it accordingly. Please do not attempt to euthanize a rabid animal yourself.

What to do if you have lost your pet

If you are missing a pet please call the Jamestown Police at 401-423-1212 and ask to speak with the Animal Control Officer. If the ACO is not on duty leave a description of the animal with the dispatcher who answers the phone. A report will be taken and left for the ACO to review when she returns for her next shift. In the meantime, if someone locates your pet and reports it to us we will contact you. Please remember to register your dog with the Town. Failure to do so will result in fines, and it also makes it very difficult for us to locate the owner of a stray pet.

If my dog gets loose and is caught by the ACO, what will happen?

If your dog is picked up by the ACO or one of the police officers it will be placed in the Town's impoundment facility. This facility is located behind the Town Offices. It is an outdoor facility intended for temporary use only. If the owner of the dog cannot be immediately located it will be transported to the North Kingstown Animal Shelter. The owner of the dog will be subject to Jamestown fines, impoundment fees, and also North Kingstown impoundment fees.
